Biosourced formulation with flame retardant performance

Biosourced formulation with flame retardant performance
07.102016
The innovation generated by this two-year research and resourcing project between FCBA and IPREM has enabled these two institutes to develop their own expertise in the field of material formulation and reaction to fire. An eco-responsible solution was developed by replacing conventional fire retardants, currently considered to have an impact on the environment and health, with a new generation of biosourced fire retardants, composed of natural products. The effectiveness of these new formulations has been tested in terms of reaction to fire on rigid insulation panels.

Project statement

In France and Europe, building materials such as cladding or insulation must have a fire rating in accordance with fire regulations for buildings open to the public. This requires fireproofing and the durability of the fire improvement provided. The most widespread fireproofing treatments are based on two principles, surface treatment (by application of an intumescent system for example), or treatment in the mass (integration of fireproofing salts most often based on boron or ammonium polyphosphate or subsequent addition by autoclave treatment for example).

The development of new generations of additives is becoming a priority in order to improve the durability of fireproof treatments for wood in interior and exterior use (cladding, decking, etc.) and to deploy new manufacturing processes with low environmental and health impact.

The two paths studied are promising:

  • surface treatment of fibres for high value-added applications

  • surface spray treatment of wood or fibre surfaces with an optimised formulation based on natural products and a mineral filler whose composition is protected. Research into industrial valorisation is underway
